For a road trip into Turkey, the vehicle's right to enter deserves as much attention as the traveller's documents. Do the checks before departure, especially if the owner, driver and country of residence are different.
Confirm temporary vehicle-entry eligibility
Turkey's Ministry of Trade publishes the rules for accompanied foreign-plated vehicles. Eligibility depends on residence abroad and other conditions; it is not determined by nationality alone. Check the relevant residence-history test, ownership or rental documents, authorisation and permitted users directly with customs. Do not assume that a general tourist stay automatically grants the same period for the vehicle.
Carry insurance valid in Turkey and confirm the accepted licence and any permit or translation for its issuing country. Advice written for UK licence holders should not be treated as a universal rule for Bulgarian or other licences. Save written answers from the insurer, owner or rental company.
Set up road payment before the toll road
KGM's guidance tells foreign-plated vehicles to register for HGS and maintain enough credit before using tollways. Use the correct vehicle class and registration details. Keep account and payment information accessible, and check the relevant operator for bridges, tunnels or privately operated routes in your plan.
Before reaching the exit border, check for unpaid passages, violations and fines through the official services. KGM warns that unpaid toll fines can prevent a foreign-plated vehicle from leaving. Do not rely on a guessed grace period or expect the border to be the easiest place to resolve a payment problem.
Keep a separate return checklist
• Record the vehicle's authorised customs exit deadline.
• Check who is permitted to drive and what happens if the importer leaves first.
• Retain entry, insurance and toll-payment records.
• Allow time to resolve an incorrect number plate or outstanding charge.
• Recheck official regional travel advice before a long detour.
Plan distances generously
Choose overnight stops around the actual roads and conditions, not just the map's fastest estimate. Download essential addresses and check mobile charges before entry. If a breakdown threatens the customs deadline, contact customs and the insurer promptly rather than assuming the time limit pauses automatically.
