The Bay of Kotor resembles a fjord but is a drowned river canyon, enclosed by steep limestone mountains. Kotor’s walled old town contains Romanesque churches, Venetian palaces, small squares, and a maritime museum. Its fortifications climb dramatically toward San Giovanni, though the ascent is steep, exposed, and unsuitable in extreme heat or poor weather.
Perast is smaller and more serene, with baroque palaces and church towers facing the narrow Verige strait. Boat trips visit the islet of Our Lady of the Rocks, home to a church and museum assembled over centuries. The neighbouring natural islet of Saint George is generally viewed from the water rather than visited.
Risan adds Roman mosaics and deeper Illyrian and Roman history, while Herceg Novi spreads across slopes near the bay entrance with fortresses, gardens, and a long waterfront promenade. Villages such as Prčanj and Stoliv preserve old churches, stone houses, and seafaring associations away from the busiest centre.
