Valletta compresses palaces, churches, museums, balconies, and fortified views into a small peninsula. Saint John’s Co-Cathedral, the Grand Master’s Palace, Upper Barrakka Gardens, and the National Museum of Archaeology reveal different periods of Malta’s story. Across the Grand Harbour, the Three Cities offer older waterfronts, forts, and quieter lanes.
Mdina, the former capital, is an enclosed city of honey-coloured limestone, noble houses, churches, and narrow streets. Nearby Rabat adds catacombs and Roman remains. Malta’s prehistoric temple complexes, including Ħaġar Qim, Mnajdra, and the underground Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum, are internationally important; the Hypogeum has strictly limited advance tickets.
Gozo feels more rural. The Citadel rises above Victoria, while Ġgantija preserves some of the world’s oldest free-standing monumental structures. Coastal highlights include Dwejra’s dramatic geology, salt pans near Marsalforn, and walking country around Xlendi and Ta’ Ċenċ. Comino’s Blue Lagoon is beautiful but heavily pressured, so visit responsibly and consider quieter alternatives.
