Cinque Terre’s five villages occupy a steep cultural landscape shaped by generations of dry-stone terraces. Monterosso has the broadest beach and an older hill town; Vernazza gathers around a small natural harbour; Corniglia sits high above the water; Manarola rises from dark rock; and Riomaggiore follows a narrow valley to the sea. Each has churches, lanes, viewpoints, and its own relationship with the surrounding vineyards.
Walking is one of the best ways to understand the landscape, but trails are not interchangeable. Some are steep, require suitable footwear, or close after landslides and bad weather. The popular lower paths may also require a park card. Trains and seasonal boats connect the villages and usually make more sense than attempting to park in them.
Portovenere, outside the five-village park, deserves equal attention. The striped Church of San Pietro stands on a rocky promontory, while Byron’s Grotto, the old lanes, Doria Castle, and harbour façades create a dramatic ensemble. Boats reach Palmaria island for walks and coves when conditions allow.
Look for focaccia, pesto, anchovies, farinata, local wine, and the sweet Sciacchetrà wine. Confirm official trail status, park-card rules, train disruption, boat services, and swimming conditions; never cross a closure barrier.
