Rothenburg ob der Tauber preserves an unusually complete walled-town silhouette above the Tauber valley. Market Square, the Town Hall, councillors’ tavern, fountains, gates, and timber-framed houses create the public face of the town, while small lanes and former artisans’ quarters show a less formal urban texture. The town-wall walk provides repeated views over roofs and surrounding countryside.
Saint James’s Church contains an important carved altarpiece associated with Tilman Riemenschneider. The Medieval Crime and Justice Museum examines legal history with necessary context, while the Imperial City Museum occupies a former convent and explores civic and religious life. The castle garden stands where an earlier fortress once overlooked the valley.
Below the walls, paths descend toward the Double Bridge, mills, vineyards, and river landscape. The Kobolzeller gate ensemble and Spital quarter are particularly atmospheric.
