Strasbourg’s Grande Île is encircled by branches of the Ill and forms the heart of its UNESCO-listed centre. The sandstone cathedral dominates the skyline with a sculpted façade, medieval stained glass, and astronomical clock. Around it, Maison Kammerzell, narrow streets, churches, and museums record a city shaped by commerce, religion, and changing borders.
Petite France occupies the former millers’, tanners’, and fishermen’s quarter. Half-timbered houses line canals near covered bridges and the Vauban Dam, whose terrace gives a broad view back over the district. The area is photogenic but also heavily visited; nearby streets and the historic cellar of the city hospital reveal quieter sides of Strasbourg.
The Neustadt, created during the German imperial period, broadens the architectural story with monumental avenues, university buildings, and public institutions. Farther east, the European Parliament quarter represents Strasbourg’s modern international role. Museums cover Alsatian life, fine art, archaeology, and the work of illustrator Tomi Ungerer.
