The French Alps change constantly from the shores of Lake Geneva to the Mediterranean. Thonon-les-Bains offers a waterfront, historic centre, lake views, and the nearby Château de Ripaille before the landscape rises toward mountain pastures and traditional Savoyard villages.
Around Beaufort and the Roselend area, visitors can see green grazing country, the turquoise reservoir, dramatic dam scenery, and farms associated with Beaufort cheese. Higher valleys bring glaciers, waterfalls, and the protected landscapes around Vanoise National Park. Col de l'Iseran, when open, is one of the grandest high-mountain viewpoints.
Farther south, the scenery becomes increasingly rugged around the Galibier and Izoard passes. Briançon is worth a longer stop for its steep old streets and Vauban fortifications, part of a UNESCO World Heritage inscription. The Casse Déserte near the Izoard is especially striking for its bare rock pinnacles and almost lunar landscape.
The Queyras area adds larch forests, stone villages, mountain crafts, and quieter valleys. In the southern Alps, Mercantour National Park brings alpine lakes, gorges, biodiversity, and a mix of Alpine and Mediterranean influence. Visitors should use established access points and follow protected-area guidance.
Nice provides a vivid contrast at the end of an Alpine journey: explore the ochre lanes and markets of the old town, the seafront and Promenade des Anglais, hilltop viewpoints, museums, and nearby coves. Many high passes close in winter and can close temporarily in poor weather, so check official road and park information before visiting mountain areas.
