Dubrovnik’s fortified old town presents an unusually complete ensemble of walls, gates, churches, monasteries, palaces, and public spaces. The Stradun crosses the centre between Pile and Ploče gates, passing Onofrio’s Fountain, the Franciscan complex, Sponza Palace, Rector’s Palace, and the Church of Saint Blaise. Small lanes and stairways reveal residential life behind the ceremonial axis.
A circuit of the city walls opens views over terracotta roofs, fortifications, the old harbour, and sea. It is exposed, busy, and hot in summer, so timed tickets and an early start matter. Fort Lovrijenac adds another perspective across the western harbour, while museums interpret maritime trade, government, archaeology, and the 1991–92 siege.
Lokrum island provides woodland, monastery remains, rocky bathing places, and protected nature a short boat ride away.
