Split grew inside and around the Roman palace built for Emperor Diocletian. The Peristyle, cathedral complex, cellars, gates, and tightly layered lanes make the historic centre feel inhabited rather than preserved behind a boundary. Marjan hill adds pine-shaded paths and viewpoints, while the markets and waterfront reveal the modern city around the ancient core.
Trogir occupies a small island connected by bridges. Its UNESCO-listed centre compresses Romanesque and Renaissance buildings into a walkable network of lanes and courtyards. The Cathedral of Saint Lawrence, Kamerlengo fortress, city loggia, and waterfront are highlights, but the carved doorways and quieter side streets are just as rewarding.
Šibenik’s Cathedral of Saint James is celebrated for its stone construction and sculpted heads. Above it, the old town climbs through steps and passages toward fortresses overlooking the channel. Nearby Krka National Park combines waterfalls, river landscapes, monasteries, and archaeological sites, with access arrangements that vary by entrance and season.
Ferries open further possibilities on Brač, Hvar, and Vis, but schedules need checking. Taste grilled fish, pašticada, soparnik, local olive oil, and Dalmatian wines. Historic centres are busiest in mid-summer; reserve major sights and respect bathing, park, and ferry guidance.
